Born in Greece, Yiannis Efstathopoulos is a guitarist who performs, teaches and lectures in Brussels where he is based. His recording debut came in 2019 with the album “Seis Caprichos-Spanish guitar music around 1930” featuring works from the Spanish modernist period and being released by “Passacaille” records.  

Drawn to the Spanish guitar at an early age, he took his first lessons with Evi Pavlidou in the Conservatory of his hometown Dráma, in the north of Greece and obtained his Diplomas in Harmony (K.Hizaris’ class) and Counterpoint (Nikos Solomonidis’ class). He passed and studied parallel in the music high school with Gabriel Pavlides, studying both classical and traditional music; at the age of 15 he performed his first guitar concerto with orchestra.

 

On completing school, he moved to Thessaloniki to study classical guitar in the University of Macedonia – Department of Music, Science & Art, as well as in the State Conservatory. He had the privilege of studying with both Elena Papandreou and Thanos Mitsalas, under whom he obtained both his undergraduate degree and the Soloist’s Diploma with the highest marks. He went on study with Oscar Ghiglia in the historical ‘Academia Chigiana’ in Sienna, where he received a scholarship and the “Diploma di Merito”.

 

In 2011 he moved to Belgium and studied in the “Royal Conservatory of Brussels” with the internationally acclaimed professor Antigoni Goni. He obtained a Masters with highest distinction, and returned to the Conservatory in 2014 in order to work as an assistant researcher and teacher till 2021. During 2019-2021 he taught Historical informed performance practice at the Guitar’s Masters program of the same institute. His teaching activity includes the Cervantes Institute of Brussels as well and since 2021 the Municipal Conservatory of Brugge.

 

As a student he participated in numerous masterclasses with world famous guitarists such as: Rafael Andia, Sergio and Odair Assad, Roland Dyens, Zoran Dukic, Carlo Marchione, Sharon Isbin, Margarita Escarpa, Duo Melis, Costas Cotsiolis, Gerardo Nuñez and Rolf Lislevand. During 2016-2017 he had the privilege to study with maestro Carles Trepat, to be introduced to the gut-strung Spanish guitar and to be invited in the recreation of Lira Orfeo Miquel Llobet for the 200-years of Antonio de Torres.

 

Historical performance practice is the topic which as been at the heart of his activity in recent years. After studying early plucked-instruments with Dirk De Hertogh, Nicolas Achten he obtained his second master with Xavier Diaz-Latorre in baroque guitar and vihuela. He began to research the history and evolution of the Spanish guitar, focusing on the late Romantic period through till the end of World War II and in 2021 he became of Doctor of Arts in the Royal Conservatory of Brussels (in collaboration with the VUB – Free University of Brussels) with his thesis “The concert guitar in Spain from 1920 to 1939: Reconstructing a lost performance practice”. His research was received as contribution on the Spanish guitar schools and innovatory too as it analyses for the first time topics on performance practice of the early 20th century combined with applied examples on gut-strung guitars. Part of his artistic result was the recorded concert “Spanish guitar at the times of Falla and Lorca” in collaboration with Spanish lute legend Javier Mas and distinguished guitarist and composer Mario Mas.

 

Yiannis has given recitals and chamber music concerts in Greece, Italy, Spain, France, Belgium and the Netherlands in reputable concert halls such as Palais des Beaux Arts, Flagey(Brussels), Palacio Chigi(Siena), Seu Vella(Lleida) and Megaron Concert Hall(Thessaloniki). He has collaborated with groups “Les Alchimistes” and “Balkan project” in Brussels, “Omicron Ensemble” in Athens and “Lira Orfeo Miquel Llobet” in Barcelona.

 

Aside from his performances, he gives regular lectures in academies and conservatories in Belgium, and has also presented his research in major guitar conferences at the Universities of Surrey” ( UK), Melbourne (Australia), Hong-Kong, Dublin, Granada and published as well in international magazines.

 

Ο Γιάννης Ευσταθόπουλος είναι κιθαριστής, ερευνητής και παιδαγωγός όπου ζει στις Βρυξέλλες, Βέλγιο.  

Γεννήθηκε το 1987 στη Δράμα. Τα πρώτα του βήματα στην κιθάρα έγιναν στην ηλικία των 9 στο Δημοτικό Ωδείο με την Έυη Παυλίδου και στο Μουσικό σχολείο Δράμας με το Γαβριήλ Παυλίδη. Ολοκλήρωσε με Άριστα τα πτυχία Αρμονίας (τάξη Κ.Χίζαρη) και Αντίστιξης (τάξη Ν. Σολωμονίδη) από το ΔΩΔ.

 

Στη συνέχεια φοίτησε και ολοκλήρωσε με βαθμό τελικού ρεσιτάλ κιθάρας ‘Άριστα’ τις σπουδές του στο Πανεπιστήμιο Μακεδονίας-Τμήμα Μουσικής Επιστήμης και Τέχνης υπό την καθοδήγηση της καθ. Έλενας Παπανδρέου. Παράλληλα σπούδασε και απέκτησε το Δίπλωμα κιθάρας με Άριστα από το Κρατικό Ωδείο Θεσ/νίκης στην τάξη του καθ. Θάνου Μήτσαλα. Το καλοκαίρι του 2010 παρακολούθησε με υποτροφία την ιστορική μουσική Ακαδημία Chigiana της Σιένα της Ιταλίας με τον maestro Oscar Ghiglia όπου έλαβε τον τίτλο “Diploma di Meritο”.

 

Από το 2011 ζει στις Βρυξέλλες όπου και πραγματοποίησε δύο μεταπτυχιακά στο Βασιλικό Ωδείο Βρυξελλών: κλασική κιθάρα και παλαιά νυκτά όργανα. Αποφοίτησε με τις ανώτατες διακρίσεις από την τάξη κιθάρας της καθ. Αντιγόνης Γκόνη. Όσον αφορά την παλιά μουσική, ακολούθησε μαθήματα λαούτου και θεόρβης με τους Dirk de Hertogh και Nicolas Achten και απέκτησε το δεύτερο μεταπτυχιακό του με τον Xavier Diaz-Latorre παίζοντας βιχουέλα και μπαρόκ κιθάρα .

 

Κατά τη διάρκεια των σπουδών του έχει συμμετάσχει ενεργά σε σεμινάρια με διάσημους κιθαρίστες όπως: Rafael Andia, Sergio and Odair Assad, Zoran Dukic, Sharon Isbin, Margarita Escarpa, Κώστας Κοτσιώλης και ανάμεσα σε άλλους κιθάρας φλαμένκο με Gerardo Nuñez και λαούτου με τον Rolf Lislevand. Κατά την περίοδο 2016-2017 μαθήτευσε πλάι στον Carles Trepat στη Βαρκελώνη ο οποίος τον εισήγαγε στο ιστορικό παίξιμο ισπανική κιθάρας με εντέρινες χορδές. Τον Ιούνιο του 2017 τον κάλεσε στη αναβίωση της αυθεντικής ορχήστρας νυκτών Lira Orfeo-Miquel Llobet για τα 200 χρόνια του Antonio de Torres. Η ορχήστρα συμμετείχε επίσης στo δοκιμαντέρ “La Española-La de Torres” (2020).

 

Από το 2014-2021 εργάστηκε και δίδαξε στο Βασιλικό Ωδείο Βρυξελλών ως ερευνητής και βοηθός κιθάρας ενώ το 2019-2021 δίδαξε επίσης ιστορική εκτέλεση στο μεταπτυχιακό τμήμα κιθάρας. Η διδακτική δραστηριότητα τα τελευταία χρόνια περιλαμβάνει επίσης δημόσιες και ιδιωτικές μουσικές σχολές της Φλάνδρας και από 2021 το Δημοτικό Ωδείο της Μπρυζ. Ακόμα, κατά την περίοδο 2018-2022 δίδαξε στο Ισπανικό Ινστιτούτο Βρυξελλών κιθάρα και μουσική προπαιδεία.

 

Μεταξύ 2014-2021 πραγματοποίησε διδακτορική έρευνα με τίτλο διατριβής «Η κιθάρα κονσέρτου στην Ισπανία κατά την περίοδο 1920-1939-Αναπλάθοντας μια ξεχασμένη παράδοση/εκτέλεση» στο Ελεύθερο Πανεπιστήμιο Βρυξελλών. Η έρευνα του κρίθηκε ως συνεισφορά για τις ιστορικές ισπανικής σχολές κιθάρας αλλά και ως καινοτόμα, εφαρμόζοντας για πρώτη φορά πειραματισμό σε όργανα και χορδές εποχής. Ως καλλιτεχνικό αποτέλεσμα παρουσίασε την ηχογραφημένη συναυλία «Η κιθάρα στην εποχή του Φάλια και Λόρκα» σε συνεργασία με τους Javier Mas και Mario Mas καθώς και την πρώτη δισκογραφική του δουλεία με τίτλο «Έξι καπρίτσια-Ισπανική μουσική για κιθάρα γύρω στο 1930» (Passacaille, 2019). O δίσκος παρουσιάστηκε πλήρως αλλά και αποσπασματικά στην Κρατική Ραδιοφωνία της Ισπανίας, Ελβετίας, Βελγίου, Γαλλίας αλλά και Ελλάδας. Επίσης, έχει πραγματοποιήσει επιδοτούμενη έρευνα σε διάφορα αρχεία και βιβλιοθήκες της Ισπανίας, διαλέξεις σε συνέδρια στα Πανεπιστήμια των: Surrey(Αγγλία), Μelbourne (Αυστραλία), Hong-Kong, Dublin και Γρανάδας ενώ άρθρα του έχουν δημοσιευθεί σε διεθνή περιοδικά.

 

Έχει δώσει ρεσιτάλ σε χώρες όπως Ελλάδα, Ιταλία, Ισπανία, Γαλλία, Βέλγιο, Ολλανδία σε περίφημες αίθουσες όπως Palais des Beaux Arts, Flagey(Brussels), Palacio Chigi (Siena), Seu Vella (Lleida), King’s College(London) και Μέγαρο Μουσικής Θεσσαλονίκης. Τέλος, έχει δώσει σεμινάρια και διδάξει στα Αγγλικά, Ισπανικά, Ολλανδικά και Γαλλικά.
